About the Toyota 86
Reece M purchased this Toyota 86 used for $20,000 (including all on-road costs) in 2019. Reece M would buy this car again because: “Purchased from dealership and paid extra for warranty which gave me extra peace of mind and made the process all around easier. Could have probably found a cheaper version privately but with the added money from my car trade in, it didn’t make a lot of difference for me versus the convenience. Car is now insured for $30,906 which they base on Redbook and I’ve paid extra to boost the value by 15 per cent. “
How reliable has your car been? Tell us about any issues.
It has been 100 per cent reliable, I’ve never had a single issue with car not starting or not working for whatever reason. Car has been running like a dream since purchasing and gets a regular annual service (it doesn’t do excessive kilometres).
What do you think of the ownership experience with your car?
It’s been wonderful, there are many different groups for 86s/BRZs including many in my area and I find the culture of the groups I’ve been in to be alright (considering the others I’ve experienced).
I’ve always loved Toyotas and stand by the fact that they’re the most reliable cars, however always found the Toyota service centres and dealerships to be useless and charge exorbitantly.
Are you happy with the price and features of your car?
People are always blown away when they ask how much I paid for my car, as they expect it to cost much much more. For a 2013 model it still looks practically brand new and gets as much attention as newer cars.
In terms of features, I find all of them to just be an added bonus! I love the heated seats and folding mirrors, as well as the black metallic paint which really pops.
What do you think of the performance and economy of your car?
Performance wise it’s not the fastest or best, but the wide range of aftermarket accessories/modifications make up for it, including ability to supercharge or turbo. Economy in terms of fuel is not the best, as it only allows for U98 fuel to be used.
Like any car the mileage per litre really fluctuates depending on if you are constantly flooring it at the lights, using sport mode, doing mostly highway driving, etc. In saying all of that, it is a sports car so it’s to be expected.
What do you think of the technology in your car?
I’m pretty happy with the technology considering the age, head unit was not the best so I’ve replaced that along with most of the audio system and added sound deadening to improve the audio sound which is now pretty perfect.
I’ve also added in my own tech like reversing camera, front and rear dash cam, etc.
What do you think of the ride comfort and handling of your car?
Think this car scores highly in this one, I love the seats and the feel of driving the car and feeling every part of the road which vastly improves the driving experience for me.
Handling is pretty good but easy to slip out which I believe is more of an issue with my tyres than anything else, but have plans to upgrade to stickier tyres soon. There are also many aftermarket parts available to change the handling and ride comfort/feel of the car to suit each person.
Do you have any additional comments about your car?
I find it to be an all-round great car, still in love with the look, style and feel many years later. Love the drive and being able to feel the road and car. Another plus is the wide range of aftermarket options, allowing for easy modification to tailor the car even more.
