    About the Toyota 86

Harper Bishop purchased this Toyota 86 used for $18,000 (including all on-road costs) in 2021. Harper Bishop would buy this car again because: “I feel lucky every time I get that boxer bopping to experience its balance, steering feel and fun factor. It’s a buzz to know that Japanese engineers can still create a cracking coupe that drives above its capacity in the twists and lives up to the legendary Supra or MR2. And at any car meet I just gape at the 86 mods on offer.”

How reliable has your car been? Tell us about any issues.

Over the 12 months I have owned the car so far, I have had no mechanical issues whatsoever. One of my closest friends just hit 250,000km on his 86 which is fairly high for these cars, and he has not had a single issue either.

What do you think of the ownership experience with your car?

In general it was a great experience for me. The handling, the performance, washing it every weekend, looking back at it 10 times while walking away from it. I have no regrets in buying this car and would highly recommend it.

Are you happy with the price and features of your car?

For the price I paid, I am very happy with the purchase. One of my favourite features of the car is the front seats and how the car is very driver oriented. Another great feature is how customisable these cars are.

There’s thousands of different parts to change to suit your style.

What do you think of the performance and economy of your car?

The Toyota 86 has the opportunity to run on 98RON or E85. Personally, I feel like the car performs fairly well and packs a punch.

The fuel economy is 7.8L/100km which honestly isn’t the greatest. The car also only produces 147kW/205Nm, which many will dislike.

What do you think of the technology in your car?

The technology is certainly lacking, especially in the base models. The GT model only has a CD player.

Similarly, the GTS model has a little head unit which speaking to many 86 owners, has a lot of issues. The speakers are also terrible.

What do you think of the ride comfort and handling of your car?

With the bucket seats in the front and the tiny seats in the back, the Toyota 86 is not the most comfortable car, especially on long trips.

You also feel every bump in the road. However, the car still handles well.

Do you have any additional comments about your car?

Although I’m still young and learning, I love the car and it brings much happiness.
