The BYD Sealion 6 was only released in Australia a few months ago, but the Chinese brand has already rolled out an update for the new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) mid-sized SUV.

Following local feedback, BYD has tweaked the Sealion 6’s suspension tune as part of a rolling update. Initial Australian-specification BYD Sealion 6’s were criticised by media for having a soft and floaty ride.

The CEO of BYD’s local distributor EVDirect, David Smitherman, told CarExpert this suspension tweak is only for new vehicles now rolling off the production line and isn’t retrofittable to Sealion 6s that have already been delivered.

The Sealion 6 is the latest BYD model to get minor adjustments as part of a running change. Another example includes the Atto 3 electric SUV receiving new Continental tyres and a larger touchscreen infotainment system, among other tweaks for the 2024 model year (MY24) update.

The BYD Sealion 6 has been Australia’s top-selling PHEV for the last two months, outselling the likes of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. It’s also on track to top the PHEV sales charts for the year, despite only launching in June.

There are currently two variants of the BYD Sealion 6 available in Australia – the Dynamic and the Premium AWD. They’re priced at $48,990 before on-roads, and $52,990 before on-roads, respectively.

Powering the Sealion 6 Dynamic is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, as well as a single front-mounted electric motor. Total system outputs are 160kW of power and 300Nm of torque.

The Sealion 6 Premium AWD, on the other hand, has a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine combined with a front-mounted electric motor and a rear-mounted electric motor. Total system outputs are 238kW and 550Nm.

Both variants are equipped with a 18.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) BYD Blade battery that allows for up to 92km of EV range in the Sealion 6 Dynamic, and 81km of EV range in the Sealion 6 Premium AWD.
