Electric cars are best known for their quiet rides and being environmentally-friendly. At this end of the market, there’s also a focus on outright speed.

But none of that counts for much if you’re constantly worrying about running out of charge.

These are the large electric cars with the best range. The following vehicles have been selected from the large passenger car segment of the VFACTS sales charts published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

We’ve used the homologated range for Australia published in the Green Vehicle Guide for each of these cars, which is aligned with the more lenient NEDC test cycle, as it allows us to compare these vehicles against a consistent standard.

Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan with Performance Battery Plus has a claimed maximum driving range of 651km in Australia.

Using as little as 17.8kWh/100km depending on equipment, the Porsche Taycan features an electric motor that makes 380kW of power and 710Nm of torque. It is also equipped with a gross battery capacity of 105kWh.

Starting at $216,300 before on-road costs, the Taycan is equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and is backed by a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Mercedes Benz EQE

The Mercedes-Benz EQE 300 Auto has the largest claimed driving range of its line-up, with a maximum of 626km in Australia.

Power comes from a single electric motor on the rear axle, making quoted outputs of 180kW and 550Nm.

Priced at $134,900 excluding on-road costs, the EQE 300 has a smaller battery than its other family members, holding 89kWh. It uses a claimed 16.3kWh per 100km.

Mercedes-Benz backs the EQE 300 with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. The EQE 300 is also equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

BMW i5

The BMW i5 eDrive40 has the largest claimed driving range in the i5 lineup, clocking a claimed 550km against Australian standards.

With a battery capacity of 84kWh, and an energy consumption rate as low as 15.9kWh/100km, the eDrive40 starts at $155,900 excluding on-road costs.

Audi e-tron GT

The Audi e-tron GT has a claimed driving range of 540km in Australia.

Starting at $182,400 excluding on-road costs, the e-tron GT has a gross battery capacity of 93kWh and consumes 19.2kWh per 100km.

The entry-level e-tron GT develops system outputs of 350kW and 630Nm, which are upped to 390kW and 640Nm in boost mode.

The Genesis G80 Electrified can travel a maximum of 520km according to its Australian certification.
