The new Volkswagen Amarok will be cheaper than a HiLux, or a first-generation Amarok, to service – but it is marginally more expensive than the related Ford Ranger.
Volkswagen Australia has confirmed the Amarok will cost $1800 to service for five years or 75,000 kilometres with one of its prepaid Care Plans, undercutting the price of the equivalent package for a 2022 four-cylinder diesel by $200, and a 2022 turbo-diesel V6 by $400.
Those who don’t opt for a Care Plan on the new Amarok will pay $329 for the first, second, and fourth service, $414 for the third service, and $400 for the fifth – equivalent to the same price over five years, but paid for at the time of service rather than being bundled into the car’s purchase price.
The service costs on a previous-generation Amarok were frightening if you didn’t opt for a Care Plan; the 2022 four-cylinder model cost a combined $3805, while the V6 would have cost you $4019 over five years or 100,000 kilometres.
Along with its predecessor, the new Amarok is competitive with most of its biggest rivals.
A Toyota HiLux requires maintenance every six months or 10,000 kilometres, and just three years of maintenance will set you back a combined $1740 – beyond that, Toyota’s capped-price offer runs out. The brand estimates you’re up for a further $2024 for the next four visits, for a total five-year cost of $3764.
The best-selling Ford Ranger with which the Amarok shares a platform and engines has a capped-price cost of $1716, while the Isuzu D-Max costs $2435, and the Mitsubishi Triton will set you back $2895.
