Toyota RAV4 supplants HiLux, Ranger as top-selling vehicle in July

The mid-sized Toyota RAV4 SUV topped the sales charts in July, unseating the two pickups that usually reign: Toyota’s HiLux, and Ford’s Ranger.

Toyota claims to have sold 4309 RAV4s in July, up 78 per cent over the same month last year. This put it ahead of the HiLux (2947, in runout ahead of the MY21 update) and Ranger (3104).

The stunning result can be attributed in large part to greater supply from Japan, whittling down waiting lists. Toyota secured an additional 8000 RAV4s in April for a July delivery, all of which were the volume-selling hybrid versions.

The stellar month takes the RAV’s annual tally to 19,583 sales (up 43 per cent), meaning it also sits third overall year-to-date (YTD) behind the Ranger and HiLux utes, and ahead of the always-popular Toyota Corolla and Hyundai i30 passenger vehicles.

The RAV4 also managed to own 31.3 per cent market share in the Medium SUV segment where it competes during July, and took its YTD share to 23.4 per cent.

Combined July sales of the RAV4’s three most popular direct competitors – the Mazda CX-5 (1727), Nissan X-Trail (1116), and Hyundai Tucson (1087) – were still lower than the Toyota’s solo tally.

Perhaps more interestingly, Toyota internal figures show that of the July sales haul, about 80 per cent delivered had hybrid drivetrains, well ahead of the yearly average of 60 per cent share.
