Toyota HiLux: Updated best-seller teased

The updated Toyota HiLux has broken cover for the first time, with Formula 1 Fernando Alonso behind the wheel.

The facelifted dual-cab ute is likely to arrive in Australia during the coming months, with a tough, American-inspired nose to help it stand out among a crop of new and refreshed competitors.

It’s expected to pack a more powerful iteration of the current 2.8-litre turbo-diesel, which currently outputs 130kW of power and 450Nm of torque.

Inside, the infotainment system is set to get a major update, finally gaining Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

“The latest iteration of the world’s favourite pick-up will feature a new and powerful 2.8-litre powertrain and new suspension geometry to continue to uphold the nameplate’s reputation of legendary quality, durability and reliability,” Toyota Europe overnight said in a statement.

Although heavily camouflaged, the car featured in the Toyota teaser appears to confirm what renders leaked last month suggested.

Up front, the ute looks to have a more prominent grille and redesigned headlights.

Changes are expected to be more subtle at the rear, where the bodywork will be largely unchanged. The lights will likely feature fresh detailing.

Although it remains Australia’s best-selling car, the HiLux is facing tougher-than-ever competition from all angles.

The Ford Ranger has been constantly refined over its life, while there are new versions of the Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 on the horizon.
