Suzuki has used the Delhi motor show to reveal the long-anticipated Jimny 5-Door, a more practical version of its iconic mountain goat 4×4.
While the company has sold 3.2 million Jimny models in 199 countries, this body shape is something new.
At 3985mm long, the Jimny 5-Door is 340mm longer than the regular model, while the 2590mm wheelbase on the ladder frame grows by the same. Ground clearance is a claimed 210mm.
There are no changes to the drivetrain to handle the added bulk, with the current 1.5-litre petrol carrying over – mated to a part-time 4×4 system with low-range, and available with five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission choices.
Maruti Suzuki in India did, however, mention the fitment of automatic start/stop.
Official details are scarce but the livestream mentioned the fitment of curtain airbags for both rows, a new touchscreen infotainment system, and some new colours including Sizzling Red.
Unlike the Japan-made Jimny, the Jimny 5-Door will be assembled in India for export to Australia.
The good news for prospective Australian buyers – who, as we’ve reported, are lining up in droves already – is that the longer model should lob here before year’s end.
Australia has become a major market for the Jimny. It was Suzuki’s second top-selling model here last year and remains subject to long wait times after four years on sale.
“With the launch of the all new Jimny 5 Door, we’ve given Jimny enthusiasts exactly what they’ve wanted for so long – an Extra Large Jimny!” claims Suzuki Australia general manager Michael Pachota.
“Jimny has built an absolute cult following in Australia and will only continue to grow with a new breed of followers that need the extra space.
“The launch of this new variant will only add to this model’s iconic status and will continue to be one of the most loved 4x4s in the country.”
