The Australian Federal Police has charged one man and are searching for another after a ram raid in Canberra last week saw a Subaru Outback used as a battering ram to obtain an electric trike.
At about 3:20am on Friday, December 6, CCTV cameras in Westfield Woden captured a Subaru Outback being driven into the shopping centre, before going front-first into the window of a Cash Converters.
The driver of the Subaru – which was reported as stolen in November – is seen climbing out despite the wagon still being in gear, which sees him briefly being jammed between the door and the escalator before the door gets pulled back on its hinges.
Their accomplice can then be seen rushing to stop the car which was still in reverse, before getting back into the car and waiting for the first person to obtain goods from the store.

Despite the Outback featuring a large boot with enough space to hold multiple large items, the man who climbed out of the wagon can be seen grabbing and attempting to ride away on an e-trike.
Both men left the shopping centre but the one who drove off in the Subaru – a 48-year-old who was on bail for previous offences – was later located and charged with joint commission aggravated burglary, joint commission theft, driving a motor vehicle without consent, using a number plate issued for another vehicle, and unlawfully possessing stolen property.
Police are not only on the lookout for the other man but also the stolen e-trike and Subaru, which was last seen with European-style numberplates bearing the registration ‘A YAC61T’… and with a driver’s door that no longer appears to close thanks to these clumsy crims.
The use of a Subaru Outback to perform the ram raid shows a departure from what used to be the norm, as Impreza WRXs used to be the vehicle of choice in the 2000s due to not only being common but also fast.
