Nissan is reportedly planning to launch all-electric versions of its Qashqai, Juke and X-Trail crossovers in Europe from 2025.
As reported by Autocar, Nissan Europe boss Guillaume Cartier hinted these electric Qashqai, Juke and X-Trail models will be sold alongside e-Power models.
All these electric Nissan SUV variants are reportedly expected to be replacements for the current-generation models in Europe. The Juke EV will also reportedly be the first model of the three on sale there.
Mr Cartier told Autocar the move will help the company achieve its current goal to have electric vehicles (EVs) comprise more than half its total global sales by 2030.
Qashqai e-Power
They also said it will help build the popularity of the company’s e-Power hybrid powertrain.
“The point is we go in a transition manner, in a smart manner, with e-Power then to BEV,” said Mr Cartier.
“We’re just launching e-Power [now]. We need to take the benefit of it on Qashqai.
“We have evolved, so this is something that it’s natural to look at, which would be the future.”
Juke Hybrid
All three of these Nissan EVs will reportedly sit on the EV-dedicated version of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s Common Module Family (CMF) family called CMF-EV.
The first EVs to use this platform include the Nissan Ariya and Renault Megane E-Tech Electric.
Currently the Nissan Qashqai and X-Trail both use the CMF-CD platform, while the smaller Juke sits on the CMF-B architecture, which underpins vehicles like the Renault Captur and Arkana.
Ariya
It’s likely these Nissan EVs will feature battery packs that allow for ranges that extend beyond the up to 400km WLTP claimed range figure of the Ariya.
Nissan Europe vice president for research and development (R&D) David Moss told Autocar in December last year a new-generation lithium-ion battery will come within a few years with “better energy density and efficiency and a lower cost”.
The trio of Nissan EVs will arrive too early to take advantage of the company’s all-solid-state-batteries, which are set to go into mass-production by 2028.
It’s unclear if or when these electric versions of the Nissan Qashqai, Juke and X-Trail will be made available outside of Europe.
X-Trail e-Power
On the local front, Nissan Australia recently launched the X-Trail e-Power which is only available with all-wheel drive and five seats.
Nissan’s e-Power series hybrid system is a little different to the concepts of brands like Toyota, in that the onboard combustion engine doesn’t directly drive the wheels.
It’s attached to a generator which can power the e-motor through an inverter, and charges a small lithium-ion battery pack.
Qashqai e-Power
Nissan recently noted seven-seat and single-motor versions of the X-Trail e-Power could become available should local buyers demand such options.
The smaller Qashqai e-Power hybrid is due to hit Australian showrooms later this year and will only be available with a front-wheel drive powertrain. An all-wheel drive version isn’t expected anywhere in the world.
Nissan revealed the Juke Hybrid, which doesn’t use an e-Power powertrain, in Europe early last year. Originally off-limits for Australians, Nissan Australia’s local chief recently said it could in fact be on the cards for us.
