The Mercedes-AMG GT two-door coupe and roadster are about to reach the end of the road, with orders now closed in Australia.
A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson confirmed the situation with us today, but added there are still a few units floating around the Mercedes-Benz dealer network.
This is backed up by a report by Spanish publication, Motor.es, that said European orders closed at the start of October 2021.
The publication also claimed that production will cease at the company’s Sindelfingen plant in Germany in December 2021 after the final GT coupe and roadster examples are produced.
The AMG GT has had a fairly long history in Australia with it joining the Mercedes-AMG range in coupe form in 2014.
A convertible model arrived in 2017 along with a facelift to the entire range in 2018-19.
There’s been a number of different trims of the two-door GT including the full-fat GT R Pro high-performance model.
The current Mercedes-AMG GT two-door coupe and roadster consists of the GT coupe Night Edition, GT C and GT R models, as well as the flagship GT Black Series.

- 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Night Edition: $294,077
- 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT C: $367,276
- 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT R: $373,277
- 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series: $796,777

All GT models are powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 that produces 390kW of power and 670Nm of torque in the GT Night Edition, and 537kW and 800Nm in the flat-plane Black Series.
This is all mated to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels only in the two-door models.
Orders are still open for the GT 4-door coupe that was introduced to the range in 2019, which will continue on into 2022.
After the two-door GT models are gone, the four-door GT will continue the nameplate.

The two-door models are largely unrelated to the GT 4-door coupe which rides on a different MRA platform.
This platform features a rear-wheel drive-based architecture which underpins the C-Class, E-Class, GLC, CLS, as well as the previous generation S-Class. The two-door GT models instead ride on a bespoke aluminium spaceframe platform.
There’s also an high-performance electrified version of the four-door GT coupe in the form of the GT 63 S E Performance.

This model uses the same 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine but blends this with an electric motor for a total system output of 620kW and 1400Nm. It can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 2.9 seconds.
So what’s next?
At this stage there’s no confirmed direct successor to the GT coupe and roadster.
There’s going to be a next-generation SL convertible that’s been confirmed as an indirect successor according to Mercedes-Benz executives.

In the last few months there’s been a solid stream of spy photos and leaks of the new-generation SL convertible.
Its interior has also been revealed as well.
A rumoured next-generation GT coupe is also in the works with it potentially sharing the next-generation SL convertible’s aluminium chassis and many of its mechanical components.
There hasn’t been any next-generation GT coupe prototype spied yet, thus there’s no official reveal date set.
Mercedes-AMG SL interior
This new SL model will bear the Mercedes-AMG nameplate for the first time since the model was first introduced in the 1950s.
It’ll also be the first SL model to have a canvas folding roof since 2001.
The new generation SL is rumoured to be revealed on October 20, 2021 as it was recently leaked at an internal Mercedes-AMG presentation.
According to the latest VFACTS data, Mercedes-AMG has sold 57 GT coupe and roadsters up until September 2021.
It outsold models such as the soon-to-be axed Nissan GT-R (22) and Audi R8 (30), but paled in comparison to the segment-leader, the Porsche 911 (316).
