Lamborghini’s first crossover is due to get a mid-life refresh next year, the company has confirmed.
Francesco Scardaoni, Lamborghini’s regional director for Asia-Pacific, this week told Australian media we can expect an updated Urus in 2022, but wouldn’t offer any further details.
Company executives essentially confirmed a hybrid variant before the Urus was revealed in production form, and we’ve been waiting ever since.
There’s also been rumours Lamborghini is working on an even higher performance version potentially wearing an ‘S’ or ‘Evo’ badge.
There’s a few hybrid drivetrain options scattered throughout the Volkswagen Group the engineers at Lamborghini could tinker with.
The most obvious is the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo plug-in system, which in Stuttgart’s super-SUV makes a combined 500kW and 900Nm, good for a 3.8-second sprint from 0-100km/h and a top speed of 295km/h.
Given the ‘standard’ Urus manages 478kW and 850Nm from its non-hybridised 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, as well as a 3.6-second sprint to 100km/h and a top whack over 300km/h, the heavier PHEV version will need to take it up a couple of notches.
Rumours of more than 600kW have been reported by Car Magazine, combining the standard Urus engine with a 125kW e-motor. The British publication also says the PHEV will be known as the ‘Urus PowerHybrid’.
The second new variant believed to be in the works is a more powerful, more track-focused version.
According to Car, this model will be dubbed ‘Sport RS’, however Lamborghini’s current naming structure could also see it badged ‘Evo’ or ‘S’.
In this “raw” guise, the 4.0-litre V8 will be bumped to over 500kW of power, and will likely feature an array of upgrades to make the Urus a high-riding track monster.
Whatever’s in store, expect Lamborghini’s super-SUV to make a real statement. Stay tuned to CarExpert for all the latest.
