Jeep has axed the 2.4-litre four-cylinder ‘Tigershark’ engine from its Cherokee, making the mid-sized SUV a V6-only model.
The four-cylinder has been discontinued globally, according to a Stellantis spokesperson.
CarExpert understands demand for the four-cylinder Cherokee was limited.
The range in Australia therefore now starts at $50,450 before on-road costs for the Limited trim, featuring a 200kW and 315Nm 3.2-litre V6 and all-wheel drive.
Gone is the base Sport trim that offered the four-cylinder and front-wheel drive, as well as a lower asking price of $38,250 before on-road costs.
The 2.4-litre four-cylinder produced 130kW of power and 229Nm of torque.
This engine can also be found in the Jeep Compass which will continue to be offered in Australia. It can also be found in all-wheel drive form for this model.
The Cherokee is now the only mid-sized SUV to offer a V6 in Australia, let alone an off-road oriented Trailhawk trim level.
Rivals such as the Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander and Subaru Forester are only available with four cylinders.
In August 2021, Jeep sold only 18 Cherokees according to the latest VFACTS data.
The current KL model has been on sale in Australia since 2014.
It received a facelift in 2019 with a redesigned front fascia and has since been offered in a number of special editions.
