The new Jeep Avenger crossover hasn’t landed in Australia yet, but the brand has already revealed a more capable addition to the range.
Unlike the front-wheel drive, electric versions already confirmed for a launch Down Under, the new all-wheel drive Jeep Avenger 4xe is aimed at drivers who want to take their car off pavement.
It also isn’t electric, instead featuring a mild-hybrid powertrain like European-market Avenger e-Hybrid models.
European orders for the Avenger 4xe are set to open by the fourth quarter of 2024. While Jeep Australia has yet to confirm the 4xe for our market, CarExpert understands it’ll eventually come here.
It’s the first Avenger with all-wheel drive, and the first 4xe-branded Jeep to not feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The 4xe features a 101kW 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, a 21kW electric motor on each axle, and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Top speed is a claimed 194 km/h, while the 0-100 km/h sprint takes 9.5 seconds.
At speeds under 30km/h the Avenger 4xe is permanently all-wheel drive, with a 50:50 split.
Above 30km/h, the rear electric motor activates only upon demand to provide all-wheel drive traction, and then above 90km/h it disengages for maximum fuel efficiency.
4xe models are equipped with a Selec-Terrain function which allows the driver to select a program based on the road surface.
Auto is selected by default, but drivers can also choose from Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud.
Sport maximises power and torque, Snow shifts the focus to stability, and the Sand/Mud mode engages specific gear ratios and traction control settings tailored for uneven terrains.
The adventure-focused Avenger 4xe also gains multi-link rear suspension, replacing the rear torsion beam of other Avengers.
There’s also a 10mm increase in ground clearance, and improved off-road angles.
Approach, breakover and departure angles are 22, 21, and 35 degrees, respectively. Maximum wading depth is a claimed 400mm.
Jeep has also given the Avenger a rugged makeover for the new 4xe variant.
A rear tow hook, roof bars, and durable ‘waterproof’ seats are all fitted as standard.
The Avenger will arrive in Australia in electric guise in the fourth quarter of 2024.
It’s the brand’s first electric vehicle (EV), and is priced from $53,990 before on-road costs.
