Hyundai locks more Ioniq electric cars for Australia

Hyundai is planning to open the taps on supply of its Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 electric cars for Australia.

The futuristic SUV and sedan have been in short supply since debuting locally, but Hyundai Australia COO John Kett says things are set to get better in the second half of 2023.

“It was more like a lottery trying to get an Ioniq 5 and 6 in the last 18 months, we’re trying to broaden access to that,” Mr Kett told media.

There are 300 cars in the country now available for immediate delivery, with 1000 more due in the coming months.

At launch, Hyundai sold the Ioniq 5 through an online portal in small batches – ranging from 240 cars when the Ioniq 5 first hit our market, to just 68 at one point. It’s even been selling certified pre-owned cars in a bid to meet demand.

Rather than selling through dealers, the brand has taken central control of the process. Buyers from rural regions have been cut out, with Hyundai only offering them to people in capital cities.

A total of 617 examples of the Ioniq 5 and 6 have been sold in Australia to date this year.

Along with the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, the brand’s range of electric cars will expand to include the new Kona Electric before the end of 2023.

Pricing hasn’t been confirmed, but the hybrid range tops out at $46,500 before on-roads, and the current Electric range starts at $58,000 before on-roads.
