GMC is soon making its Australian debut, bringing with it the Yukon SUV to establish itself in a growing market.
It’ll be sold alongside its closely-related Chevrolet Silverado cousin in General Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) showrooms, meaning the two brands only sell V8-powered models in Australia.
While the Yukon has been tipped as the best fit for local buyers, it’s perhaps not the most recognisable vehicle in GMC’s global lineup.
That title arguably belongs to the Hummer EV – the circa-4300kg revival of the nameplate which was long associated with the US army, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and early-2000s rap culture.
Available as both a pickup and SUV, the GMC Hummer EV is one of the most capable electric off-roaders the public can buy. But it will, for now at least, remain off limits for Australian buyers at their local GMSV dealer.
“Right now there are no plans to bring the Hummer EV to Australia, but obviously across all GM offerings, we’ll continue to evaluate what’s right for the market and our customers at the right time,” General Motors Australia and New Zealand managing director Jess Bala said.
However, those who do want to get their hands on the Hummer EV will soon be able to do so through Autogroup International.
Based in Sri Lanka but with Australian ownership, the firm is converting both pickup and SUV versions of the Hummer EV to right-hand drive, as well as homologating it and making it ADR compliant.
Autogroup is yet to announce prices for the Hummer EV, though it’s expected to cost between $150,000 and $165,000 before on-road costs when it lands in Australia.
