A not-so-camouflaged Genesis GV60 Magma has been spied testing on German roads ahead of a likely 2025 production debut.
First revealed back in March, the GV60 Magma will hit showrooms as a launch model for the Korean manufacturer’s new performance sub-brand as early as next year.
Images have now surfaced from Germany showing the GV60 engaged in testing on roads surrounding the Nurburgring, and the mule looks a little different to the concept we saw in New York.
The bright orange paintwork that adorned the concept lineup largely remains, but elsewhere there are plenty of changes.
Compared to the aggressive bumpers fitted to the concept, the mule sports toned-down items from the standard GV60 which are unlikely to feature on the production Magma model.
Further back, the test car is missing massive rear wing from the concept. In its place is a subtle ducktail spoiler.
Clues to the mechanical underpinnings of the GV60 Magma are also visible in the spy shots.
The prototype was spotted riding on Hyundai Ioniq 5 N wheels housing N-branded brakes, suggesting that the two Hyundai Motor Group siblings will share parts under the skin.
That may extend to the powertrain. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has 478kW of power and 770Nm of torque from its dual electric motor setup, while the existing GV60 Performance flagship produces 360kW and 700Nm.
In concept form, the GV60 Magma was unveiled with sticky semi-slick tyres, lower springs, wider wheel arches, a new front bumper, a rear diffuser and a rear spoiler, while inside there are Nappa leather and suede-lined bucket seats and orange and titanium highlights.
A regular GV60 was recently spotted testing with cosmetic changes, paving the way for a facelift to go on sale alongside the new Magma, while the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 have both also received recent updates.
Genesis revealed a quartet of Magma concepts at the New York motor show back in March, which included hot versions of the existing GV60 SUV, G80 sedan and GV80 Coupe SUV, plus a wilder X Gran Berlinetta sports car concept.
It’s still unknown whether the performance models will be sold in Australia, but Genesis Australia CEO Justin Douglass is keen to see them on local roads.
“What truly sets our heart racing is the forthcoming range of high-performance Magma models, led by the production version of the GV60 Magma concept,” Mr Douglass said last month.
“We’re incredibly excited by the Magma’s potential in Australia, given the country’s affinity for high-performance luxury vehicles.
“Whilst we’re working diligently to secure Magma for Australia, it’s a tad too early to confirm but rest assured we’re leaving no stone unturned.”
“I think [the Magma sub-brand] would resonate very well in our market.”
