Ferrari reportedly plans to expand its Maranello plant to include a third production line dedicated to electrified vehicles.
As reported by Bloomberg, the Prancing Horse has reportedly acquired land near its Maranello plant and has started clearing space for a new line.
The new production line will be exclusively dedicated to producing hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs), according to an undisclosed source.
They also hinted the production facility expansion will likely also include a new battery research and development (R&D) centre.
Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna is reportedly expected to detail this new project at its capital markets day on June 16, along with more details about its EV strategy and business roadmap for the next four years.
The former STMicroelectronics executive was appointed as CEO of the Italian automaker in June 2021 to accelerate the use of cutting-edge technologies.
Earlier in 2022, Ferrari also detailed an organisational reshuffle that pointed toward its electrified future and focused on its 2030 carbon neutral pledge.
The Prancing Horse broadened its leadership team with the promotion of internal talent and bolstered this with a number of external hires from technology backgrounds.
The local division of Ferrari recently said its move to electrification has been “well received” by customers locally and overseas.
In April 2021, then interim Ferrari CEO John Elkann confirmed Ferrari is definitely going to make an all-electric car, and it will be unveiled in 2025.
Ferrari already has the 296 GTB and 296 GTS plug-in hybrid (PHEV) supercars that are powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine with an electric motor between the engine and dual-clutch transmission. Total system output for both models is 610kW of power.
The Prancing Horse also offers the SF90 PHEV supercar which is powered by 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 and three electric motors. Total system outputs are 735kW and 800Nm of torque.
Earlier in 2022 the Prancing Horse said it will manage the “exclusivity” of its first SUV, the Purosangue.
Mr Vigna recently confirmed to Reuters that the Purosangue will be available with a V12 engine.
As previously reported, CarExpert understands the V12 will be naturally-aspirated and the Purosangue will be available with other powertrain options. It’s expected these other powertrains will include electrified options.
Images of the upcoming Ferrrari Purosangue recently leaked showing parts of its four-door coupe SUV body, as well an official teaser showing off the front.
This SUV will seat up to four passengers and is based on a new front mid-engine architecture.
It’s understood the Purosangue’s platform is able to support both hybrid and PHEV powertrains.
Two all-electric SUVs are expected to follow after the Purosangue as well.
