The Ford F-150 Lightning is about to get some competition from Ram.
Stellantis, the brand’s parent company, has confirmed an all-electric Ram 1500 is coming in 2024 – and it’s going to have 800km of range.
That range figure is in line with the range-topping Tesla Cybertruck, and puts the Ford F-150 Lightning (up to 480km) in the shade.
It’ll be joined by a more car-like Ford Ranger rival, also offering a claimed 800km of range when it launches in 2026. Battery capacities will range between 101 and 118kWh, and the ute will be built on the upcoming STLA Large electric platform.
Exactly what will underpin the new 1500 isn’t clear, but we know Ram will offer batteries up to 200kWh in capacity and to achieve that headline range figure.
Given Stellantis has confirmed it’s developing electric motors with up to 330kW of power, a dual-motor 1500 could have up to 660kW for performance to make TRX owners a bit nervous.
Payload, towing capacity, and off-road ability will be confirmed closer to the car’s reveal in 2024, but the company is promising to outdo all its competitors.
That list of competitors is growing rapidly. Along with the Tesla Cybertruck, the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and GMC Hummer are all gunning for the EV ute crown.
The battery-powered utes are part of a much broader push into the world of electric cars by Stellantis, an amalgamation of FCA and Peugeot Citroen.
It plans to invest more than €30 billion in electrification by 2025, and wants more than 70 per cent of its European sales to be low-emissions by 2030.
In the USA, that 2030 sales target is a more conservative 40 per cent.
The new electric cars will have a range between 500 and 800km, and fast charge capability of 32km per minute on the right AC charge infrastructure.
The push will be underpinned by four flexible electric platforms, three different types of motor, and a range of standardised battery packs.
