Don't expect an ANCAP safety rating for the Hyundai i30 Sedan

The current Hyundai i30 Sedan has never been crash-tested by Australian independent crash testing authority ANCAP to date, and this won’t change for the time being with the new update.

Speaking with CarExpert, Hyundai Australia general manager of corporate affairs Bill Thomas confirmed the company won’t have the i30 Sedan tested by the local crash testing authority “unless ANCAP decide[s] to crash test it in Australia”.

“[The i30 Sedan is] not sold in Europe, so they won’t share a Euro NCAP score with the car,” he said.

“[ANCAP] may decide to crash test the car in Australia, in which case we will fully cooperate with that.

“If ANCAP would like to crash test it, then that’s not an issue for us.”

Mr Thomas elaborated by saying Hyundai Australia would sell ANCAP the cars and not provide them to ANCAP for free.

ANCAP has previously conducted local testing of the Palisade, once in pre-update form and another in current guise, in 2022.

Other Hyundai vehicles with a current ANCAP safety rating that have been tested locally include the Staria in 2021, the Venue in 2019, and i30 hatch in 2017.

The Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kona, Nexo, Santa Fe and Tucson on the other hand all have current ANCAP safety ratings but based on testing conducted by Euro NCAP. The two safety authorities have harmonised testing protocols.

It’s worth noting the US’s Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the updated i30 Sedan’s US-market Elantra counterpart a 2023 Top Safety Pick rating.

Given the Hyundai i30 Sedan isn’t receiving an ANCAP safety rating for the time being, this potentially limits fleet sales opportunities for the company.

Many Australian companies that purchase fleet cars require them to buy ones that have a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

With the latest update, the entire Hyundai i30 Sedan range picked up Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, as well as front parking sensors.

Certain i30 Sedan variants also received Bluelink connected car services, a surround-view camera and Blind Spot View Monitor.
