Cupra has introduced two new more affordable engine variants to the Ateca range in Europe – but don’t expect to see a lower starting point in Australia anytime soon.

Previously only available with a 221kW 2.0 TSI petrol engine with all-wheel drive, the global Cupra Ateca portfolio will be bolstered by 110kW 1.5 TSI and 140kW 2.0 TSI variants from the third quarter of 2023, the latter with all-wheel drive.

Speaking with CarExpert, a spokesperson for Cupra’s Australian division said: “The high-performance VZx (221kW) powertrain is the most relevant for Ateca in the Australian market and the one we will continue with locally”.

It means the local Ateca range will miss out on a sub-$60,000 variant like the other nameplates in Cupra’s line-up, with the existing Ateca VZx priced from $66,750 drive-away. That’s despite the Leon and Formentor both offering the 140kW 2.0 TSI powertrain locally.

The Cupra Ateca 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TSI are both mated to a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic as standard, and while offering substantially less power than the existing 221kW donk, both are claimed to “meet Cupra’s dynamic requirements”.

“The brand’s signature is continued in the exterior and interior design and equipment options, adding even more choice and value for its customers,” Cupra says in its global media release.

Interestingly, both the 110kW and 140kW engine options are offered in the SEAT Ateca line-up overseas, with the former actually being offered with a six-speed manual transmission – yes, the performance brand doesn’t offer the enthusiast’s transmission option.

Compared to its SEAT equivalent, however, the Cupra Ateca gets a more aggressive body kit, different alloy wheels, the brand’s signature copper accents throughout, Cupra Bucket sports seats, as well as standard sports suspension and tuning.

That said, the Cupra Ateca isn’t all that different in appearance to the sporty SEAT Ateca FR trim offered abroad.

Cupra has confirmed the new engines and equipment grades will be available to order in overseas markets from July 2023, with production starting during the third quarter. Expect deliveries late in the third quarter or into the fourth.
