Great Wall Motor (GWM) claims to have sold 100,208 new vehicles across its brands in October, with 21,052 of them sold outside China – an apparent new record.
GWM’s latest sales report says about 21 per cent of its tally last month came from export regions, which represented percentage growth of a smidgen under 50 per cent year-on-year.
Its factory-backed distributor in Australia, where it sells the GWM Ute dual-cab as well as Haval SUVs (Jolion and H6), moved 2462 vehicles here in October – short of its all-time record tally achieved the previous month but sufficient to make it among GWM’s main markets.
October marked the first time GWM made the overall top 10, finishing tenth and pushing Subaru into 11th.
Year-to-date GWM sits 14th in the Australian market with 18,833 sales, up 26.5 per cent in a total market that’s up 0.9 per cent. It’s also outsold Suzuki and Honda in the process.
That’s a drop in the ocean to GWM, which has sold 902,521 vehicles this year total, but it’s among the biggest sources of uptake beyond China – making it easier for GWM Australia to lobby for more product in right-hand drive.
Beyond the GWM Ute, Haval Jolion small SUV and Haval H6 SUV (the latter pair both available as petrol or hybrid), the company plans further expansion here in 2023.
Indeed, its local factory-backed distributor has a number of new products in the pipeline.
While delayed, we’re still expecting to see most of the GWM Tank 300, GWM Tank 500, and GWM Haval Dargo SUVs, the new GWM Ora Good Cat EV hatch and GWM Ora Next Cat EV sedan, and the 260kW petrol V6-powered GWM Shanhai Cannon ‘premium’ pickup from 2023.
CarExpert understands the brand could have a total of six or seven electrified cars in its line-up by the end of next year. Great Wall Motor globally reckons it will launch more than 50 electrified and electric vehicles by 2025, many of which will hit Europe next year.
It’s still not the number-one Chinese brand here however, with SAIC Motor’s MG dominating with 38,891 sales YTD (up 21.5 per cent) and sitting seventh overall in the market.
Sales of China-made cars are up 51.2 per cent in Australia this year, helped in no small part by the Tesla Model 3/Y as well.
