BYD has turned its Ocean-M concept into a reality, in the form of the Seal X.
Filings with the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) uncovered by Car News China reveal the hatchback (or should that be wagon?) will sit alongside the Seal sedan in the range.
At 4630mm long on a 2820mm wheelbase, it’s almost as long as a Hyundai Tucson SUV – rather than a hot hatch, it’s a slightly smaller take on the Seal sedan.
The MIIT filing features reference to a Seal 06GT, a Seal Mini, and a Seal 05EV. It’s possible the X badge is just a placeholder, as BYD locks down its final branding for the electric hatch-cum-wagon.
Car News China reports a single-motor rear-wheel drive model will be offered with 160kW of power, while a 310kW dual-motor version will also be offered. BYD Blade batteries will feature under the skin.
The base Seal sedan currently sold in Australia has 150kW is rear-wheel drive, while the range-topper has 390kW and all-wheel drive.
A choice of 18-inch and 19-inch wheels will be available.
Whether a more out-there look will be offered isn’t clear. The Ocean-M was an aggressive concept, with an over-the-top aerodynamics package and bright orange paint.
