BMW is recalling 20 examples of its X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV due to a manufacturing issue that may cause an electrical short circuit when the high-voltage battery is fully charged.
This recall only affects certain X5 xDrive45e PHEV variants sold in 2020.
“Due to a manufacturing defect, the battery does not meet specifications and may experience an electrical short circuit when fully charged, which could result in a fire,” the company said in its recall notice.

If you own an affected vehicle, you’ll need to contact your local BMW dealer to have a free fix done “as soon as possible”. It also says to bring the affected vehicle to your appointment with the battery state of charge as low as possible.
Until the work is completed, BMW says adjust a setting using the following steps:
- Settings
- Drive mode
- Battery control
- Set or leave the battery charge on 30%
The company also says not charge your affected vehicle using the cable, and not to use the manual gearshift mechanism, the sport shift on the gear selector, or the paddle shifters until it’s fixed.
