An upcoming hotter version of the BMW M2 two-door sports car has been spied in Europe ahead of a potential reveal during 2024.
It’s understood this sportier M2 model will adopt the CS moniker, which has previously been used on lighter and more powerful M2, M3 and M5 models.
Compared with the regular M2, which was only revealed in October last year, this spied M2 CS prototype appears to be lower with slightly wider wheels.
There are also altered air intakes on the front bumper, as well as a more prominent ducktail rear spoiler.
It’s expected BMW M will massage some extra power and torque out of the current M2’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six engine for the track-ready CS model, though it’s unclear how much more. The regular model produces 338kW and 550Nm.
It’s also unclear how much weight BMW could strip out in the M2 CS, as the regular model weighs between 1700-1725kg unladen depending on the transmission option.
As previously reported, BMW M CEO Frank van Meel confirmed to BimmerToday the M2 will be the last M model without any form of electrification.
“We will see increasing electrification in other vehicles, of course in different forms, starting with the 48-volt electrical system and plug-in hybrids to fully electric drives,” explained Mr van Meel when translated from German to English.
“From this point of view, the M2 will be the last M with a pure combustion engine drive and also without electrification scope such as a 48-volt on-board network.”
The first of these dedicated electrified high-performance BMW M models was the XM plug-in hybrid SUV, which recently launched in Australia.
Other electrified vehicles offers includes the all-electric i4 M50 four-door coupe, iX M60 SUV, and the i7 M70 large sedan. These are geared as more regular performance rather than high-performance offerings.
The next-generation BMW M5 is rumoured to adopt a version of the XM’s plug-in hybrid powertrain.
It’s unclear what this means for the next-generation M3 and M4 sports cars, though mid-life updated versions were recently spied.
