The BMW 5 Series Touring and all-electric i5 Touring will be revealed during the northern hemisphere’s spring in 2024 – indicating a March-June global launch date for the company’s next-generation wagon.
According to BMW’s media release with accompanying teaser image, the 5 Series Touring will be available with the same range of drivetrain options as the 5 Series Sedan, meaning 48V mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrid variants as well as all-electric i5 models.
So, expect 520i, 520d, 530i, 530e, 540i, 550e, i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60 versions to all be offered depending on market. For example, the 530i and 540i are sold in the US and not in Europe.
It’s unclear whether the 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring will be confirmed for the Australian market, given the most recent iteration was axed from public sale but still offered to various police forces.
At some point in 2024 there will also be an M5 Touring as well, which has been confirmed to be powered by a new M Hybrid powertrain – confirming rumours of the first electrified M5 offering plug-in hybrid power.
While further details are scant, CarExpert expects the M5 will get a version of the V8 PHEV system already used by the BMW XM, which in Red Label tune develops a hefty 550kW and 1000Nm. It’s unclear whether the XM’s big 25.7kWh battery will also be used, or subbed out in favour of a smaller, lighter power storage unit.
Expect xDrive variable all-wheel drive to also be offered. It’s also unclear whether BMW will do both ‘standard’ and hotter Competition versions of the new M5 Sedan and Touring like other members of the M family.
The new M5 Sedan and M5 Touring are two of several new models confirmed by BMW M Division for a 2024 launch, with updated M3 and M4 models, as well as a new M4 CS also on the way.
Stay tuned to CarExpert for all the latest.
