Is this our first glimpse at the forthcoming next-generation Toyota Prado?
Only a few weeks ago Toyota announced its legendary LandCruiser nameplate was returning to North America, and now the company has published an initial set of teaser images on its social media.
It’s been rumoured the next Prado, which was previewed by the Lexus GX, will simply be badged the LandCruiser in North America – rather than the full-sized LandCruiser 300 offered in Australia.
Dubbed a “Legend Reborn”, the two teaser images show shadowy side profiles of an original LandCruiser beside a new-generation example.
There’s an obvious stylistic connection between the recently revealed Lexus GX and this teased American-spec LandCruiser, as they both have virtually identical boxy silhouettes.
“With 65 years of heritage, you can choose to slow down or reinvent yourself. We chose the latter,” said the Toyota USA on its social media posts.
Lexus GX
We’re expecting the next Prado to be significantly more grown up than the current car, which dates back to 2009.
The new Lexus GX rides on a version of the TNGA-F platform that also underpins the likes of the Toyota LandCruiser 300, Lexus LX, Toyota Tacoma, and Toyota Tundra.
At launch the Lexus GX will be powered by a 3.4-litre turbocharged petrol V6 producing 260kW of power and 650Nm of torque. A hybrid powertrain has been confirmed to follow.
LandCruiser 300 
Prado
It’s expected the new US-spec Toyota LandCruiser will use similar powertrains. It’s unclear however if they will carry over to the new Prado.
Currently, the Prado is powered by the same 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine used in the HiLux and Fortuner.
Slow sales of the previous-generation LandCruiser 200 killed the car in the USA after 60 years on sale. Car and Driver reports between 2011 and 2021 just 3000 were sold on average each year.
