It appears a starring role in the development of the Aston Martin Valkyrie wasn’t enough for Red Bull Racing, as it prepares to take a second bite at developing a Formula 1-derived hypercar.
Red Bull Advanced Technologies (RBAT), the high-performance engineering arm of Red Bull Racing Group, has announced it’s gearing up to produce its first ever production car in 2025.
Dubbed the RB17, this Red Bull Racing car is described as a two-seat F1-inspired hypercar “optimised for the ultimate on-track driving experience”.
It will likely bring the fight to other F1-inspired hypercars like the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which was developed in a partnership with RBAT, as well as the Mercedes-AMG One.
Powering the Red Bull RB17 will be a V8 hybrid engine producing over 820kW of power, which for context is 45kW less than the Aston Matin Valkyrie and 38kW more than the Mercedes-AMG One.
Details about the RB17 are a little fuzzy around the edges for now, but RBAT has confirmed the hypercar will be built around a carbon-composite tub and feature “the most advanced ground effect package available in a series production car”.
Full technical details for the RB17 will be revealed closer to the vehicle’s production start date.
Pricing for the RB17 starts at £5 million ($A8.8 million) before applicable local taxes and on-road costs, and production will be limited to just 50 units.
Every RB17 will be produced at the Red Bull Technology Campus in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom.
In addition to the car itself, owners of a RB17 will receive access the Red Bull Racing teams simulators, vehicle development program, as well as on-track training and experiences.
The RB17 will also be supported directly by the factory, with servicing and maintenance tailored to each owner depending on their usage of the car.
For now we’re yet to see an actual photo of the RB17 just yet, with RBAT showing off a sketch that appears to show the passenger capsule.
The Red Bull RB17 is the brainchild of Red Bull Advanced Technologies and Oracle Red Bull Racing CTO Adrian Newey.
“The RB17 distills everything we know about creating championship-winning Formula One cars into a package that delivers extreme levels of performance in a two-seat track car,” said Mr Newey.
“Driven by our passion for performance at every level, the RB17 pushes design and technical boundaries far beyond what has been previously available to enthusiasts and collectors.”
In late 2021, Aston Martin produced its first Valkyrie hybrid hypercar which was developed in partnership with RBAT and AF Racing using concepts and technologies taken directly from Formula 1.
The Valkyrie was first announced in 2017 and shown off in prototype form a number of times before customer-bound production began.
There’s also a convertible version of the Valkyrie as well as a hotter, Le Mans-inspired version called the Valkyrie AMR Pro.
Mercedes-AMG also revealed its One hypercar in production form during June 2022 after it was initially meant to launch in 2019.
The One was held back due to the challenges in making a powertrain derived from F1 work on the road, and meet ever-tightening emissions standards.
Regardless, all versions of the Aston Martin Valkyrie and Mercedes-AMG One have sold out. Expect the same for this upcoming Red Bull RB17.
