The updated and renamed GWM Cannon ute will arrive on Australian soil with a higher entry price and a more potent turbo-diesel powertrain.

Due in showrooms this February, the rebranded Cannon – formerly the Ute – is priced from $40,490 drive-away in Lux guise, a $4000 increase over the standard price of the outgoing base model, or $5000 if you factor in GWM’s current runout offers.

Four variants will be offered – the Lux, Ultra, Vanta and XSR – with the latter flagship receiving a $3000 price cut compared to the Ute’s standard price, but a $3000 increase based on the aforementioned runout offers.

The cab-chassis body style has been axed for 2025.

All GWM Cannons feature a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine borrowed from the larger Cannon Alpha, producing 135kW of power and 480Nm of torque.

That’s an increase of15kW and 80Nm on the 2.0-litre found in the previous Ute, while the outgoing eight-speed automatic transmission has also been ditched in favour of a nine-speed unit.

Braked towing capacity has increased from 3200kg to 3500kg, matching the Ranger and HiLux as well as the larger Cannon Alpha. It had already been bumped up from 3000kg last year.

Outside, the new Cannon presents with revised front-end styling, while ‘GWM’ is embossed in the tailgate. There’s less chrome trim than before, too.

Inside, physical controls have been abandoned in favour of a simpler layout centring around a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring. The interior technology suite also includes a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster and wireless charging pad.
