Turbo-diesel inline-six power is making a comeback for the 2025 BMW X3, with the X3 40d xDrive joining the popular mid-sized luxury SUV range in Europe from May onwards.
The electrified 3.0-litre turbo-diesel variant will be sold alongside a pair of turbo-petrol versions, a smaller turbo-diesel mild-hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), rounding out the global powertrain offerings.
CarExpert understands that the newly announced 40d XDrive won’t be sold Down Under.
With the assistance of 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, the new turbo-diesel produces a punchy 223kW of power and 670Nm of torque – up 28kW and 50Nm on the previous xDrive30d.

As a result, the xDrive 40d can complete the 0-100km/h sprint in a claimed 5.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 245km/h.
As with other variants available in the Australian range, the xDrive 40d sends power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. It consumes a claimed average of 6.7L/100km on the WLTP cycle.
Production of the xDrive 40d will take place at the BMW Group Plant Rosslyn in South Africa. At this stage, Australian-bound versions of the fourth-generation BMW X3 are produced at the Spartanburg plant in the USA.
The fourth-generation X3 is longer, wider and shorter than the model it replaces.
Inside, the latest X3 has had an overhaul and now features a curved display housing a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system running BMW’s Android-based Operating System 9.
Local pricing for the 2025 BMW X3 range starts at $84,500 before on-roads for the 20 xDrive, which is up $2800 over the outgoing sDrive20i.
The M50 xDrive extends pricing to $126,900 before on-roads, a $100 increase over the M40i xDrive it replaces.
