The expected replacement for the Audi S4 has been spied testing as it nears an expected debut later this year.
As Audi is restructuring its naming system to give all cars with internal combustion engines uneven model numbers for its next-generation lineup, the S4 will become the S5 alongside the A4‘s switch to the A5.
In addition to the name change, Audi is also expected to ditch the traditional sedan body style. Instead, the new A5 and S5 Sportback will replace not only the current A5 and S5 Sportback models, but also the A4 and S4 sedan.
The Sportbacks will sit alongside a new-generation wagon, while hot RS5 models are set to be offered and could pack plug-in hybrid power.
A prototype of the new Audi A5 Sportback was spied in May last year, though we believe what we’re seeing are the latest test photos of the new S5.
The two cars look similar despite the camouflage, but we can still see a sportier front bumper than the A5 and a honeycomb grille, in line with what we expect for a more performance-oriented Audi.
Compared to the current model there’s more of a separation between the grille and lower radiator intake, while the daytime running light signature has changed.
The grille is wider and shorter than the current S4, a design trend that aligns it with other new models in the Audi lineup.
Elsewhere there are quad exhaust tips and alloy wheels with a more intricate design, but overall the S5 is very similar to the A5.
It also appears to drop the distinctive frameless doors and gain flush door handles.
Powertrains haven’t been confirmed, but it’s expected the S5 will retain its turbocharged petrol V6 with the possible addition of 48V mild-hybrid technology.
There could also be a power increase, which means the S5 could be good for around 260kW and 500Nm.

European versions are powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, which produces 251kW and 700Nm, though this powertrain has never been offered in Australian-delivered S4s or S5s.
The new-generation Audi S5 is expected to be revealed in the second half of this year, while the Australian launch could follow six to 12 months after.
