The Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD's 6.6-litre Duramax engine has been given a power bump and it now has a revised, higher-tech interior.

The updated Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD was first revealed in mid-2022, though local customer deliveries at General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV) dealers have only recently began.

A highlight of this 2024 model year (MY24) update is a power and torque bump for the Silverado 2500 HD’s 6.6-litre Duramax V8 turbo-diesel engine.

It now produces 350kW of power and 1322Nm of torque, up 18kW and 88Nm from the pre-update model.

Chevrolet claims its engineers improved low-end torque by 25 per cent, which enhances the pickup’s performance on hills and its towing ability.

There’s also a new, higher-tech interior layout reminiscent of what the smaller Silverado 1500 received with its latest update. There’s a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, repositioned wireless phone charger, among other tweaks.

Like the pre-update model, the Silverado 2500 HD continues to only be offered locally in a single LTZ Premium trim level with the Z71 package as standard. The asking price of $163,000 before on-roads is also unchanged.

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD continues to be converted from left- to right-hand drive by Walkinshaw in Melbourne.

The smaller Silverado 1500 is also converted to right-hand drive by Walkinshaw, as well as the entire Ram pickup lineup, including the Ram 2500 which is the Silverado 2500 HD’s main rival.

Pricing

There are technically two different configurations for the Silverado 2500 HD – NB1 and NB2 – which are priced the same, but offer different payload and gross vehicle mass (GVM) figures.

The NB1 Category version has a reduced payload and GVM figures, and just slides under the threshold of being able to be driven with a car licence in Australia.

The full-fat NB2 Category version has a GVM over 4.5 tonnes, and therefore requires a heavy vehicle licence.

Powertrain

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD is powered by a 6.6-litre Duramax V8 turbo-diesel engine now producing 350kW of power and 1322Nm of torque, up 18kW and 88Nm on the outgoing model.

This is mated to a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission with drive sent through a full-time four-wheel drive system (2H, Auto, 4H, and 4L). There’s a two-speed transfer case and an automatically locking rear differential.

Efficiency

GMSV doesn’t quote an official fuel economy figure for the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD.

It has a 136L fuel tank as standard, as well as a 26.5L AdBlue tank.

Dimensions

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD measures in at 6387mm long, 2263mm wide, and 2039mm tall, with a 4036mm wheelbase.

Its cargo box measures in at 2089mm long, 1814mm wide (1317mm between the wheel arches), and 533mm deep.

Maximum braked towing capacity with a 50mm ball is 3500kg, whereas with a 70mm ball it’s 4500kg. Maximum unbraked towing capacity is 750kg.

Maximum payload for the NB1 Category version, which can be driven on a car licence, is 733kg, whereas maximum payload for the NB2 Category version, which requires a heavy vehicle licence to be driven, is 1386kg.

Gross vehicle mass (GVM) for the NB1 Category version is 4495kg, whereas the NB2 Category version has a GVM of 5148kg.

Gross combined mass (GCM) for the Silverado 2500 HD, regardless of version, is 12,474kg.

Servicing and Warranty

GMSV covers the Chevrolet Silverado HD with a three-year/100,000km warranty. It also provides three years of roadside assistance.

Logbook servicing is required every 12 months or 12,000km, whichever comes first. GMSV doesn’t offer capped-price servicing, with pricing varying by dealer due to labour rates and transactional parts pricing.
