The Toyota Yaris Cross range is bolstered for 2023 with the addition of a new GR Sport variant. Prices have recently been increased.
Introduced in late 2020, the Toyota Yaris Cross sits at the bottom of the SUV line-up for the Japanese carmaker, slotting in below the larger C-HR and Corolla Cross.
UPDATE, 02/09/2023 – Toyota Australia has increased the asking price of the entire Yaris Cross range as part of a wider range price adjustment.
“Toyota Australia reluctantly took the decision to increase the recommended retail prices (RRP) for most of our range, effective 1 July 2023,” said a Toyota Australia spokesperson.
“We provided our dealers with the information ahead of implementation to assist them in managing their business and communicating openly and transparently with customers regarding vehicles to be delivered after that date.
“The increases are due to increased costs and inflationary pressures outside of our control such as more expensive raw materials, labour, tooling and packaging which are feeding into higher manufacturing costs.”
Pricing now starts at $28,000before on-road costs for the petrol-powered 2WD Yaris Cross GX and tops out at $39,000 before on-road costs for the Yaris Cross AWD Urban hybrid.
Based on the same platform as the Yaris hatch, the Yaris Cross serves as Toyota’s rival to the likes of the Ford Puma and Volkswagen T-Cross.
Toyota offers the Yaris Cross with both petrol and hybrid powertrains with the latter setting you back an additional $2000 over the petrol engine.
The Yaris Cross is also offered in all-wheel drive hybrid guise for an additional $3000 on top of the hybrid two-wheel drive.
A GR Sport variant joined the Yaris Cross range for 2023.
It has no changes to its powertrain but has retuned suspension that’s said to help sharpen steering feel and response, as well as reduce body roll.
It’s available exclusively with the hybrid powertrain and front-wheel drive.
All prices exclude on-road costs.
The front-wheel drive Toyota Yaris Cross is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol three-cylinder engine with 88kW of power and 145Nm of torque, mated with a continuously variable transmission.
The hybrid model is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine which has two electric motors, for a total output of 85kW. The internal-combustion engine alone outputs 67kW of power and 120Nm of torque.
All-wheel drive hybrid models feature a third electric motor, located on the rear axle, which supports the front axle when slip is detected at the front. Total power output is the same.
The Toyota Yaris Cross petrol has a claimed combined fuel consumption figure of 5.4L/100km.
The front-wheel hybrid Yaris Cross has a claimed combined fuel economy figure of 3.8L/100km, and with all-wheel drive this increases to 4.0L/100km.
The 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross measures 4180mm long, 1765mm wide, 1590mm height with a 2660mm wheelbase.
Boot space in the two-wheel drive models measures in at 390L. All-wheel drive models have 314L of boot space.
The Yaris Cross has been 30mm and is 90mm taller and 20mm wider than the city hatch, it is also 240mm longer despite sharing the same wheelbase.
The Toyota Yaris Cross is backed by a five year, unlimited kilometre warranty as with the broader Toyota range.
Service intervals are every 15,000kms and are backed with Toyota’s capped-price servicing, which is $250 per service for the first five years.
The Toyota Yaris Cross has a five-star safety rating based on testing conducted by ANCAP in 2021.
It received a score of 86 per cent for adult occupant protection, 86 per cent for child occupant protection, 78 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 82 per cent for safety assist.
