The LandCruiser’s bigger American cousin has been revealed. Say howdy to the all new Toyota Sequoia.
While the LandCruiser and the Sequoia share the same GA-F body-on-frame architecture, the large SUV is much more closely related to the Tundra large pickup.
Indeed the Tundra and Sequoia share the same, bold and very square styling language. Both will be produced at Toyota’s factory in San Antonio, Texas.
In the US, the Sequoia will face up against the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition and Jeep Wagoneer.
While Toyota has yet to reveal the new Sequoia’s dimensions, we expect it to be around 5.3 and 5.4 metres long. Width should be around the same as the Tundra, which clocks in at 2032mm.
This means the Sequoia will be significantly larger than the 300-Series LandCruiser that’s a shade under five metres in length and a hair narrower than two metres.
Powering all Sequoias is a 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain that’s said to deliver 326kW and 790Nm.
Unlike most Toyota hybrids, this Tundra and Sequoia’s hybrid system features an electric motor built into the 10-speed automatic transmission.
The Sequoia is available with either rear-wheel drive, or a part-time four-wheel setup that includes a transfer case and a console lever to go between 2WD, 4WD High and 4WD Low.
According to Toyota, the new Sequoia can tow up to 4080kg (9000 pounds) — a 22 per cent increase over the prior generation.
Assistance features, such as on-screen towing guide lines and assisted steering to keep the trailer straight, are available across the range.
Riding on an independent front suspension system paired with a new multi-link rear suspension system, the Sequoia is now available with adaptive suspension and load-levelling air suspension at the back.
Depending on the trim level, the Sequoia rides on 18- to 22-inch alloy wheels.
While the previous generation, launched way back in 2007, had a different dashboard to the Tundra, the new model shares this piece of furniture with the pickup truck.
In high-end grades it comes with plenty of wood- and leather-like trim, as well as a 12.3-inch instrumentation display and a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen.
There are three rows of seats with seating for up to eight passengers, although this drops to seven when the second row captain’s chairs are ordered.
The third row can slide up to 150mm (6 inches) forward and back, while the boot includes a removable cargo shelf for improved flexibility.
TRD Pro 
Designed primarily as a family hauler, the Sequoia is available with a number of TRD-branded off-road upgrades.
Those with serious off-the-beaten track intentions will likely opt for the TRD Pro model, which includes Fox internal bypass shocks, front bash plates, a wider track, selectable locking rear differential, and a number of off-road assistance modes.
It also includes a unique grille with classic Toyota lettering and an LED light bar.
The new Tundra goes on sale from the third quarter of 2022
