MG has sliced $2000 from the price of its ZS EV at launch, making it Australia’s most affordable electric vehicle… except in Tasmania.
The new starting price of $44,990 drive-away for the MG ZS EV Excite is down from the $46,990 drive-away sticker announced in March, and means the ZS undercuts the BYD Atto 3 in every state barring Tasmania.
Where MG absorbs the difference in on-road costs such as stamp duty and registration to offer a nationwide drive-away price, the BYD sticker is different depending on where you’re buying it.
Although the Atto 3 has a list price of $44,381.35, the final drive-away price varies from $44,990 in Tasmania to $47,935 in Western Australia due to the various incentives on offer around Australia.
Despite offering a longer range, sharper new look, and more up-to-date interior, the 2023 MG ZS EV will have the same starting sticker as its predecessor.
New for 2023, however, is the range-topping Essence model and its $48,990 drive-away sticker.
Some of the features found in the previous single-model range, including a panoramic sunroof and rear cross-traffic alert, are now exclusive to the Essence. You can view a full range breakdown in our price and specs article.
“We have been successful in offering the Australian market unparalleled value and we are now entering a new phase of our growth with the new ZS EV. This is the first step in our new journey to an electric future that’s here today, said MG Australia CEO Peter Ciao.
“While value will remain at the core of our product offering, value means different things to different people and we want to deliver that value to as many people as we can.”
The new ZS EV uses a Tesla Model 3-style lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry designed to maximise stability, and offers a claimed 320km of driving range – up from 263km (WLTP).
MG has also updated the drive motor and claims to have improved the battery management electronics.
Peak power is 130kW, up from 105kW, and peak torque has been cut from 350Nm to 280Nm. The 100km/h sprint takes a claimed 8.2 seconds.
Other enhancements to the new ZS EV include a slicker driver display, 10.1-inch touchscreen, LED headlights with auto-dimming, new LED tail lights, new 17-inch alloy wheels, and a tweaked grille with updated Type 2 charging port.
