Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off the 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV, the first full-electric Mercedes-AMG SUV.
The all-new Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV launches with three non-AMG variants, in addition to the two fire-breathing AMG models detailed here.
The Mercedes-AMG range will consist of the AMG EQE 43 4MATIC SUV and the EQE 53 4MATIC+ SUV.
Both AMG and non-AMG models will get a 10-cell 90.6kWh battery pack on a 400V system, with WLTP driving ranges of 431-488km for the AMG EQE 43 and 375-470km for the AMG EQE 53.
The AMG models turn up the wick over the regular EQE SUV range, with ramped up two-motor AWD systems.
The Mercedes-AMG 43 4MATIC SUV has a peak 350kW of power and 858Nm of torque via two electric motors (one on each axle).
The pinnacle of the range is the AMG 53 4MATIC+ SUV, which churns out 460kW of power and 950Nm of torque.
Opting for the AMG Dynamic Plus package increases that output to 505kW of power and 1000Nm of torque during race start, which is effectively a 10 per cent overboost feature.
Using AMG-specific electric motors capable of spinning up to 18,000rpm, a maximum top speed of 240km/h is achievable with the 53’s AMG Dynamic Plus package. Without the package you can travel up to 210km/h in the 43 and 220km/h in the 53.
In terms of performance figures, the 43 will do 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds, while the 53 is capable of 3.5 seconds with the AMG Dynamic Plus package.
The 4MATIC+ system is also capable of sending up to 66 per cent of torque to the rear axle, which Mercedes-AMG says can happen significantly quicker than a mechanical system.
Charging comes in the form of up to 22kW on an optional three-phase AC charger, or up to 170kW using an ultra-fast DC charger.
Mercedes-Benz says cobalt content is less than 10 per cent, with the rest of the optimised active material consisting of nickel and manganese.
Bi-directional charging will be possible in Japan and all models come standard with a heat pump.
In terms of dimensions, the AMG EQE SUV is slightly longer than the regular EQE SUV, measuring 4879mm in length (compared to 4863mm in the non-AMG EQE SUV), 1931mm in width and 1672mm in height. The wheelbase matches the non-AMG EQE SUV, coming in at 3030mm.
Depending on the configuration, cargo capacity comes in at 520 litres and can expand up to 1675 litres.
AMG models come standard with adaptive air suspension, in addition to an electronic active roll stabilisation on the front and rear axles. Standard brakes for AMG models are a 415mm rotor with six-piston calipers at the front, and 378mm rotors with single piston calipers at the rear.
Carbon ceramic brakes can be optioned on AMG models that measure in at 440mm with six-piston calipers on the front axle.
Rear-axle steering allows up to nine degrees of rotation (10 degrees on non-AMG models due to narrower tyre width) to increase dynamic handling and also reduce turning circle from 12.3m to 10.9m.
There are 21- and 22-inch alloy wheels available, with Mercedes-Benz’s novel Digital Light standard fitment.
The grille on the AMG EQE SUV features vertical slats to mimic the grille found on internal combustion AMG models.
While it doesn’t quite hit the record breaking coefficient of drag seen on the EQS sedan, the EQE SUV offers up a slick .25 CoD, making it one of the most aerodynamically efficient vehicles on the market.
There’s no front boot, with the bonnet opened only at the servicing department for maintenance like replacing the interior air filter.
Buyers can option the EQE SUV with the impressive Mercedes-Benz Hyperscreen, with AMG-specific functions.
It features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 17.7-inch central touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch passenger-side touchscreen all found under a shared glass cover with a metal-look perimeter and ambient lighting below for a floating look.
Models without the Hyperscreen feature a slightly different centre console and a dash design more reminiscent of the new S-Class.
Standard safety equipment on all EQE SUV models includes adaptive cruise control, active steering assist, traffic sign recognition, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, evasive steering assist, and autonomous emergency braking with front cross-traffic assist.
The AMG EQE SUV come with a 10 year battery warranty that covers 250,000km of travel and guarantees 70 per cent capacity.
