An example of the bruising GMC Hummer EV ute has arrived in Australia, for an upcoming movie that’s being filmed in Australia.
UPDATE 06/10/2022 – A GM spokesperson has confirmed this GMC Hummer EV spied at the Sydney International Airport is for an upcoming film.
“There are some GMC Hummer EVs and GMC Sierras currently in Australia that are part of filming for an upcoming movie. They will be in Australia for the next few months as part of the filming process,” said the GM spokesperson.
“We have not confirmed EVs or the GMC brand for Australia or New Zealand and don’t have any announcements to share at this time.”
A series of spy images, uploaded to the All Electric Vehicle Parts Australia Facebook group, show the Hummer EV at Sydney International Airport wrapped in clear plastic and netting, on an airplane cargo pallet.
It’s undeniable this is a GMC Hummer EV as the photos clearly show the ute’s silhouette and from the rear there’s Hummer written on the tailgate. There’s also some photos showing the flat undercarriage.
When GMC revealed the Hummer EV back in October 2020, General Motors said it was not making any announcements in relation to global markets outside of North America, at that stage.
The general response to date from GMSV has been that it’s currently focussing on offering the petrol-powered Silverado pickup and the Corvette to showrooms around Australia and New Zealand.
The Hummer EV weighs a porky 4110kg in Edition 1 guise, and packs a tri-motor electric powertrain that GMC claims can produce up to 745kW of power and 15,591Nm of torque at the wheels – though this is a wheel torque figure and not motor torque, and therefore can’t be compared directly with figures quoted by rivals.
It has a claimed range of 329 miles (529km), can tow 7500 pounds (3401kg), has a payload capacity of 1300 pounds (589kg), and does the 0-60mph (0-96km/h) sprint in approximately three seconds.
The GMC Hummer EV is the first GM vehicle to use the latest generation of electric vehicle architecture and battery cells, known as Ultium.
It’ll be used by a fleet of vehicles across the Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC brands, ranging from the mid-sized Chevrolet Equinox EV all the way up to the flagship Cadillac Celestiq luxury sedan.
GM recently revealed the Chevrolet Silverado EV, which is more work-focussed than the lifestyle-oriented GMC Hummer EV, and is a more direct rival for the Ford F-150 Lightning. It’ll be available in the US from 2023.
Both the Silverado EV and F-150 Lightning are unconfirmed for an Australian launch at this stage.
