The next-generation Toyota 86 or Subaru BRZ has been spotted undergoing testing in Michigan.
These images were first posted by kystify on his Instagram account, and was later shifted to Matt Moran’s YouTube channel.
In terms of proportions, the new 86/BRZ twins look practically unchanged. Once again the coupe has a low stance, long dash-to-axle ratio, and short rear end.
At the front there’s all-new set of headlights and a simplified bumper design. From what we can see, the rear quarter window seems to be larger too.
Out the back, the boot lid looks to be taller than before and there are new tail lights. This prototype is also fitted with a boot lip spoiler.
It will be interesting to see how much differentiation there is between the Subaru and Toyota models. On the current car, the major differences centre around badges, the front bumper design, and chassis tuning.
Earlier rumours suggested the 86 and BRZ would move to a version of the Toyota New Global Architecture, but a recent report from Best Car indicates the the next-generation sports cars would use a revised version of the current front-engine rear-wheel drive platform.
The Japanese publication also believes the new 86 and BRZ will be fitted a larger 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine lifting output to 161kW/240Nm from today’s 153kW/212Nm.
Earlier reports had said the new 86/BRZ would be fitted with a turbocharged boxer engine.
It’s expected the 86 will be rebranded as the GR 86, and the name has already been registered in Australia.
Should this come about, it will bring the model into line with other sports models, such as the GR Supra and GR Yaris, which have been developed with the help of Gazoo Racing, the company’s in-house racing arm.
