Subaru and Toyota’s next sports car collaboration has been outed.
The compact rear-wheel drive coupe has been leaked on Instagram by user stinicktuned, revealing its more aggressive new look.
Subaru USA promised visitors to the Subiefest enthusiast event an early look at the BRZ, which is likely where the photos were taken.
According to stinicktuned, Subaru and Toyota haven’t turbocharged the car. Rather than sharing its engine with the large Ascent SUV, the BRZ and GR86 will have a naturally-aspirated version of its 2.4-litre boxer engine with 162kW of power and 240Nm of torque.
Although that’s well up on the 152kW and 212Nm currently on offer, it’s nowhere near the 190kW and 375Nm you get in the Ascent.
Details about the platform underpinning the next-generation BRZ are hard to come by, but it’s believed the car will ride on a variation of the current rear-wheel drive chassis.
With compact dimensions and a similar window line to the current model, the prototype snapped by stinicktuned lends that credence.
Although reports have said the car could use the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), they have since been challenged.
The leak points to production of the new BRZ and GR86 starting in spring 2021 for the Northern Hemisphere, or autumn for Australia.
