Subaru and Toyota’s next-generation sports coupe is almost here.
Subaru USA has confirmed the 2022 BRZ will be revealed in North American autumn, meaning we’ll get a look at its second-generation sports car collaboration with Toyota before the end of November.
Details about the second-generation BRZ and Toyota GR86 are hard to come by at the moment – and Subaru’s official teaser doesn’t do much to clear things up, showing only the front wheel and a camouflaged body.
The new cars are expected to ride on a development of the current platform, which means they’ll have compact proportions and rear-wheel drive. So far, so good.
Reports from Autocar have suggested the car will also ditch its naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre boxer engine for the 2.4-litre boxer from the Subaru Ascent SUV, complete with a turbocharger.
The Ascent makes 190kW of power and 375Nm of torque, a significant increase on the 152kW and 212Nm currently on offer. Manual and automatic options will be available.
There are, however, conflicting reports. One Japanese website instead claims the next-gen car will instead have a non-turbo version of the 2.4-litre engine packing 162kW/240Nm.
On sale since 2012, the BRZ and 86 represented a return to the world of sports cars for Toyota, and a step away from Subaru’s focus on all-wheel drive ruggedness.
