Keen to get your hands on a new Ford Ranger? You’d better move fast.
A dealer bulletin shared with CarExpert has revealed how many Rangers will arrive in Australia part of Ford’s first allocation.
The 2022 Ranger will start arriving in dealers by June, according to the bulletin, and Ford will have “approximately” 7000 or 7500 cars to sell – or fewer than two months worth, based on 2021 sales – as part of its first allocation.
Ford sold a just over 50,000 Rangers in 2021 across the 4×2 and 4×4 line-ups, the latter accounting for the clear majority. That’s an average of around 4200 per month.
Based on those numbers the first allocation of 2022 models will cover fewer than two months of sales – potentially less, given Ford has had more than 16,000 people fill out the “keep me informed” section on its website for the new Ranger.
It’s not clear how the allocation is split between 4×2 and 4×4 models, but it’s likely the Blue Oval will focus on delivering the strong-selling (and more profitable) 4×4 variants at launch, led by the XLT and Wildtrak.
Demand for high-end Ranger models traditionally dwarfs that of lower-end, more affordable options.
Rivals such as Isuzu have struggled to meet demand at the top end of their new ute line-ups at launch, creating long waiting lists and frustration for customers. Ford will no doubt be keen to avoid the same fate.
Dealers will learn about their launch allocations in March, according to the leaked bulletin.
Everything you need to know about the 2022 Ford Ranger
- Three engines will be offered at launch: single- and bi-turbo four-cylinder options, and a 3.0-litre V6. They’re all diesels
- Five trim levels will be available at launch, ranging from XL to Wildtrak. A Ranger Raptor will follow late in 2022.
- Top-spec cars will have a 12-inch vertical touchscreen inside, cheaper cars get a 10-inch unit
- Sales will start in the middle of 2022 for Australia
As with the outgoing Ranger, the new model’s global research and development program was run by Ford’s Product Development Centre right here in Australia, overseeing around 2000 engineers and designers.
That means the 180-plus markets around the world that receive the Ranger will continue to have a little piece of Aussie ingenuity in them, for at least the next decade or so. Ford calls the Ranger its “one true global truck”.
This new model has huge shoes to fill, with the outgoing Ranger oscillating between number-one and two on the overall sales charts in Australia. The Ford and its Toyota HiLux rival sit head and shoulders above the competition in the sales race.
