The next-generation BMW 2 Series will arrive in Australia late in 2021 with more power, more standard equipment, and a more serious price tag.
UPDATE, 22/08/2022 – BMW Australia has increased the before on-road pricing of the 2 Series coupe range, excluding the 230i, by $2000. Prices now start at $63,900 before on-road costs.
“BMW constantly reviews its pricing structure throughout the year, taking into consideration a number of different factors,” said a BMW Australia spokesperson.
“However, we always aim to ensure our products remain appropriately positioned and represent a competitive pricing proposition in the market for our customers.”
This price increase follows a price rise from April 2022 that was for the same amount but only affected the entry-level 220i.
Two models were initially offered Down Under: the entry-level 220i with rear-wheel drive and the all-wheel drive M240i xDrive.
A mid-range 230i followed later, with deliveries beginning in June.
Revealed in July 2021, the new 2 Series isn’t related to the 2 Series Gran Coupe. Instead, it’s closely linked to the 3 Series, with the same CLAR underpinnings and the same engines.
BMW also says it harkens back to the 2002, the compact rear-wheel drive sedan that brought it back from the brink in the 1960s. Although it hasn’t been revealed yet, we’re expecting an M2 to follow the current M240i xDrive range-topper.
All prices exclude on-road costs.
Power in the 220i comes from a 2.0-litreturbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 135kW of power and 300Nm of torque, good for a 7.5-second sprint to 100km/h.
It’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.
The 230i is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 190kW and 400Nm, good for a 0-100km/h sprint in 5.8 seconds.
It’s also mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with drive exclusively sent to the rear wheels.
The M240i xDrive has a 3.0-litre inline-six turbocharged petrol engine with 285kW of power and 500Nm of torque, good for a 4.3-second sprint to 100km/h.
It’s also automatic-only, but has all-wheel drive as standard.
The 220i uses 6.3L/100km on the combined cycle, while the M240i xDrive uses 8.0L/100km. Both models require 95RON premium unleaded fuel and have a 52L fuel tank.
A fuel economy figure isn’t yet available for the 230i.
Overall length measures 4537mm, while it’s 1838mm wide and 1390mm tall, on a 2741mm wheelbase.
Boot space is 390L with the 40/20/40 folding rear seats in place.
Completely unladen, a 220i weighs 1490kg and an M240i xDrive weighs 1690kg.
The BMW 2 Series is backed by a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty in Australia.
A five-year, 80,000km pre-paid service plan costs $1700.
The 2022 BMW 2 Series hasn’t been crash tested by Euro NCAP or ANCAP, but its CLAR platform mates have all scored five stars.
