The Peugeot 508 Sport Engineered has made the leap from concept to reality – but it might not be coming to Australia.
Peugeot Australia couldn’t confirm if the plug-in hybrid sports sedan and wagon are headed Down Under, although it has made its first hybrid steps with the promise of the 3008 PHEV.
Here are the key numbers for the 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered (PSE):
- The 100km/h sprint takes a claimed 5.2 seconds
- Peak combined power from the plug-in hybrid powertrain is 268kW and peak torque is 520Nm.
- The lithium-ion battery is good for an electric range of 42km
- Claimed fuel consumption is 2.03L/100km on the WLTP test cycle
Although those are impressive, they’re not quite as impressive as the numbers promised by the 508 Sport Engineered Concept, which dispatched the 100km/h sprint in just 4.3 seconds.
The four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is backed by an electric motor on each axle, and the driver can toggle through pure electric, comfort, hybrid, sport, and a four-wheel drive lock.
The battery can be charged in less than seven hours on a domestic wall socket, in four hours on a 16A plug, and in less than two hours on a 32A wall box.
Despite the 11.5kWh lithium-ion battery lurking under the boot floor – not to mention the electric motors on the rear axle – boot space remains unchanged from the regular 508 sedan and wagon.
Not only is the powertrain smarter than a regular 508, the Sport Engineered has three-mode dampers, a wider track (24mm front and 12mm rear), 380mm front brakes with four-piston calipers, and 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.
Inside, the 508 Sport Engineered has a sports steering wheel and seats, and unique displays for the iCockpit digital instrument binnacle.
Peugeot says the 508 Sport Engineered will be available to order in the middle of October for some markets. Australia is not yet one of them.
