2021 Mazda CX-5 and CX-8 updates revealed in Japan

If you want a Mazda CX-5 or CX-8 with the latest Mazda Connect infotainment system, you might want to wait until next year.

Overnight Mazda unveiled revised versions of both crossovers in Japan.

Mazda has yet to confirm when or if these changes will arrive in Australia, but given our cars are sourced from Japan, these updates could arrive Down Under some time in 2021.

In their homeland both cars are available with an updated 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, which now produces 147kW at 4000rpm instead of 140kW at 4500rpm, while torque is unchanged at 450Nm.

Turbo-diesel and naturally-aspirated petrol models fitted with the six-speed automatic transmission also benefit from snappier gear changes.

Inside the crossovers have larger displays with the latest Mazda Connect infotainment system, measuring either 8.8 or 10.25 inches diagonally, depending on the trim level. Previously these cars maxed out with 8.0-inch screens, albeit with touchscreen functionality.

Hands-free tailgate operation and wireless smartphone charging have been added to the CX-8’s equipment list.

Top-shelf versions of the CX-8 are also available with a wider exhaust tip finisher, quilted leather bolsters for the seats, and new grille and 19-inch alloy wheel designs.
