Countdown to the arrival of a brand new GWM – formerly known as Great Wall – 4×2 cab chassis is on, but there’s still runout stock of the budget Steed out there.
This Chinese workhorse is about as no-frills as motoring gets in 2021, and as such is quite different to the new GWM Ute dual-cab. But for some people that’s all they want or need.
Once current stocks are cleared before the end of 2021, there’ll be no more Steeds. So get in now or never.
GWM Australia has whittled the Steed range back to the 4×2 and 4×4 traybacks, with single-cab configuration.
The 4×2 diesel costs just $19,990 drive-away and the 4×4 $21,990 drive-away. You’d battle to get a neat used HiLux for that money at the moment.
The petrol option is gone, leaving the 2.0-litre direct-injected turbo-diesel which makes 110kW of power and 310Nm of torque.
Standard to both models is a six-speed manual gearbox, with no auto offered. Towing capacity is 1700kg for both the 4×2 and 4×4.
The GWM Steed is rated to use 8.2-8.6 litres per 100km and has a 70-litre fuel tank.
The Steed measures 5015mm long with the fitted 2400mm x 1777mm dropside tray. The vehicle is also 1800mm wide, has 171mm of clearance, is 1730mm tall, and sits on a 3050mm wheelbase.
Payload is listed as a solid 1198kg, the turning circle 13.5m, the steering power-assisted hydraulic, suspension comprises double wishbones at the front and a solid rear axle with leaf springs, and it uses disc brakes at both ends.
ANCAP rated petrol versions of the 4×2 dual-cab Steed just two stars out of five in 2016. All other variants are unrated but unlikely to prove any safer.
Safety features are limited to ABS brakes, stability control, hill-hold assist, tyre-pressure monitoring, and two front airbags.
There’s nothing in the way of active safety features such as AEB, blind-spot monitoring etc, though these are in the new GWM Ute 4×4.
The Steed gets a five-year and 150,000km warranty, and has annual or 15,000km service intervals.
Take advantage of Australia's BIGGEST new car website to find a great deal on a GWM Steed.
