BMW’s medium SUV enters the 2021 model year with a price increase but no new standard equipment, with the range now starting at $71,900 before on-road costs.

    The 2021 BMW X3 is available with three petrol powertrains and two diesels.

    It was just edged out in the sales race by its arch-rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLC wagon, last year (4470 v 4360 sales).

    The X3 is closely related to the coupe-styled X4 SUV.

    • 2021 BMW X3 sDrive20i: $71,900 (+$1000)
    • 2021 BMW X3 xDrive20d: $74,900 (+$1000)
    • 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30i M Sport: $85,900 (+$2000)
    • 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30d M Sport: $92,900 (+$2000)
    • 2021 BMW X3 M40i: $113,900 (+$2000)

    Engines

    The 2021 BMW X3 sDrive20i uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 135kW of power and 300Nm of torque.

    The xDrive20d uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine producing 140kW of power and 400Nm of torque.

    The xDrive30i uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 185kW of power and 350Nm of torque.

    The xDrive30d uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine producing 195kW of power and 620Nm of torque.

    The M40i uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine producing 285kW of power and 500Nm of torque.

    All 2021 BMW X3s use an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

    The sDrive20i does the 0-100km/h sprint in 8.2 seconds while the xDrive20d does it in 8.0 seconds, the xDrive30i in 6.3 seconds while the xDrive30d does it in 5.8 seconds, and the M40i does it in 4.8 seconds.

    Fuel Economy

    The 2021 BMW X3 sDrive 20i uses 7.1L/100km while the xDrive20d uses 5.7L/100km.

    The xDrive30i uses 7.4L/100km, the xDrive30d uses 6.0L/100km, and the M40i uses 8.7L/100km

    All of these above figures are on a claimed combined cycle.

    All petrol models require 95 RON petrol and have a 65L fuel tank. Diesel models have a 68L fuel tank.

    Dimensions

    The majority of the 2021 BMW X3 range measures 4708mm long, 1891mm wide and 1676mm tall, with a 2864mm wheelbase.

    The M40i is is slightly different, measuring 4716mm long, 1897mm wide, and 1604mm tall.

    Boot space is 550L with all of the seats up, but can be expanded to 1600L with the second row of seats folded flat.

    All 2021 BMW X3 models have a braked towing capacity of 2000kg.

    Servicing and Warranty

    The 2021 BMW X3 is covered by a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

    BMW offers a five-year/80,000km servicing package for X3 models priced at $1950.

    This includes all of the fluids, filters and spark plugs required during the first five services.

    Safety

    Tested by Euro NCAP, only the BMW X3 xDrive20d and xDrive30i variants have a five-star ANCAP rating based on testing in 2017.

    All other variants are listed as unrated.
