The rear-wheel drive BMW 2 Series continues to take shape.
Our spy photography agency has captured more photos of the next-generation BMW 2 Series coupe, including our first look at its cabin.
While the dashboard looks to be a straight lift from the 2 Series Gran Coupe and the 1 Series hatch there are some subtle differences. The main one being the infotainment screen enclosure flows directly into the air vent section below.
The door setup is also different, as the arm rest sweeps upwards to form a pull handle.
As expected, the coupe will be offered with the company’s latest touchscreen infotainment system, as well as a customisable digital instrumentation cluster.
Today’s higher-resolution photos show the new coupe will have bulging wheel arch flares. At both ends these have given even more prominence by a horizontal cut off, and wide sills.
The coupe also features flush-fitting lift-up door handles similar to ones destined for the electric i4 liftback and iNext crossover.
Unlike the other members of the 2 Series family — including the new 2 Series Gran Coupe, and the upcoming 2 Series Active Tourer — the coupe will use a shortened version of BMW’s rear-wheel drive CLAR architecture, rather than a front- and all-wheel drive platform shared with Mini.
This can be seen quite clearly in this prototype’s dash-to-axle ratio and long bonnet.
The 2 Series coupe will likely be offered with a choice of turbocharged four- or six-cylinder engines hooked up to the rear wheels.
Rumours indicate BMW is also developing a rear-wheel drive successor to the M2.
