Toyota Australia has recalled the 2016-2018 LandCruiser 70 to fix a problem with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) that could cause a fire.
According to the company, there is a fire risk if the DPF automatically regenerates while there’s vegetation caught around the heat shield.
A DPF catches the most harmful exhaust particles from the diesel engine. When the filter gets full, it gets extremely hot to ‘regenerate’.
“When driving in dry vegetation environments, there is the potential for grasses and seeds to accumulate around the underbody and exhaust system of these vehicles,” Toyota says in its recall notice.
If it isn’t removed, vegetation such as dry grass can catch fire when the DPF regenerates, creating a risk of a vehicle fire.
Recalled vehicles will have an updated heat shield fitted to the DPF. Toyota will also fit a manual DPF regeneration button, allowing owners to manually initiate the process before driving into environments with long grass or dry vegetation.

Toyota will contact owners of the affected vehicles and organise a free fix. The work is expected to take around three hours, although owners will need to block out longer than that depending on how busy their local service centre is.
