The first new Toyota LandCruiser Prado in 15 years is finally on the way, with mild-hybrid assistance, tough new styling, and higher prices.

It’s due here later in 2024.

The outgoing Prado (dubbed the 150 Series) has existed largely unchanged since 2009, though it has received multiple small updates during its life like a more powerful turbo-diesel engine in 2020 and extra safety gear in 2021.

It did, however, lose petrol power in Australia back in 2018.

Its time is up though, and in its place comes the 250 Series Prado – bigger, boxier, and packed with new tech that brings it well and truly into the modern age.

All that comes at a premium of upwards of $12,500 more, though.

Here’s how the two Toyota off-roaders stack up on the spec sheet.

Pricing

Prado pricing for 2025 starts at $72,500 before on-roads – a $9670 increase compared to the outgoing 150 Series.

The off-road ready Altitude is a returning variant for 2025 (having been absent since 2017), and is priced between the VX and the Kakadu.

All prices are before on-road costs.

Drivetrains and Efficiency

The two Prados look like they share the same engine on paper, but there are two key additions for 2025.

The 250 Series gains a 48V mild-hybrid system, which doesn’t boost power but is instead designed to remove strain from ancillary functions by adding a motor generator and a 48V battery.

Both cars have full-time four-wheel drive with selectable low-range gearing, but while the outgoing Prado featured a six-speed automatic transmission, the new generation features an eight-speed auto.

Toyota says the new Prado has a combined 110L fuel capacity. The previous generation has an 87L main tank, while models with the tailgate-mounted spare also include an additional 63L tank for a total capacity of 150L.

Dimensions

Though the two Prados are similar in body length, the 250 Series is wider, taller, heavier, and has a longer wheelbase.

It will continue to offer both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Toyota claims the new Prado has “408 litres of luggage space even during a 6:4 split second-row seat”, according to its global press release, though boot capacity in other seating configurations is yet to be revealed.

Servicing and warranty

As with all Toyota models in Australia, the 2025 LandCruiser Prado will be backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Owners of the 250 Series can have their engine and drivetrain covered under warranty for seven years, provided it’s serviced on time at a Toyota dealer.

Toyota will also offer capped-price servicing for the first 10 visits (five years or 100,000km) at six-month or 10,000km intervals, whichever comes first.

Service pricing for the 250 Series has not yet been confirmed, however the first six services for the 150 Series are capped at $260 each.

Safety

The incoming Prado is yet to receive an ANCAP safety rating.

Previously, not every Prado offered front and rear parking sensors and a surround-view camera.

The 2025 GXL adds a rear parking support brake system designed to stop the car if a static object is detected, while the VX, Altitude, and Kakadu variants gain tyre-pressure monitoring.
