    Engines

A range of powertrains are offered with the new 5 Series, including four-, six- and eight-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines, mixed in with a plug-in hybrid and six-cylinder diesel.

The 520i features a 2.0-litre turbo inline four developing 135kW and 290Nm, driving the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic.

BMW claims the 520i can sprint from 0-100km.h in 7.8 seconds.

Stepping up to the 530i ups the 2.0-litre motor’s outputs to 185kW and 350Nm, which also reduces the 0-100 time to 6.1 seconds.

Like the 520i, the 530i drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed auto.

BMW says the 520i and 530i benefit from High Precision Injection, which operates at a pressure of 350 bar, up from the previous engine’s 200 bar. The marque says this new turbocharger technology improves efficiency and throttle response.

The 530e plug-in hybrid pairs the 520i’s 135kW/290Nm turbo petrol with an 80kW/265Nm synchronous electric motor, generator and lithium-ion battery pack.

System outputs are 215kW and 420Nm, up 30kW on the outgoing model thanks to a new XtraBoost function activated by ‘Sport’ mode which lasts for up to 10 seconds.

BMW claims a 0-100 time of 5.9 seconds for the eco-friendly 5 Series, which is also capable of driving up to 67 kilometres on e-power.

    Next in the line-up is the 530d, which scores a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel now with two-stage turbocharging, outputting 195kW and a meaty 620Nm. The diesel 5er claims a 5.7-second sprint from 0-100.

Finally, the current flagship engine variant is the M550i xDrive, which pairs a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with variable xDrive all-wheel drive.

    Generating a massive 390kW and 750Nm, the all-paw sedan can crush the 0-100 dash in a supercar-rivalling 3.8 seconds.

Both the 530d and M550i xDrive feature eight-speed automatic transmissions like their lesser counterparts.

Power in the M5 Competition features the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 460kW and 750Nm, the same as the outgoing M5, along with the X5 M and X6 M Competition.

BMW Australia hasn’t yet revealed fuel use figures for the updated 5 Series range.

    Dimensions

BMW Australia hasn’t confirmed any dimensional changes for the updated 5 Series – and being a facelift there shouldn’t be any major changes.

Weight ranges from 1540kg (kerb) in 520i form to 1826kg (tare) M550i xDrive guise in the current range.

All versions of the new 5 Series in Australia will feature the Driving Assistant Professional package as standard, including assistance technologies like all-speed autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind-spot assist, lane change assist, as well as a semi-autonomous Steering and Lane Control Assistant for highway driving.
